English-speakers version
Story Protocol is a blockchain platform designed to manage intellectual property (IP), with a focus on tokenization and rights management of creative works. It enables creators to license,, manage and receive rewards for the use of their IP through a transparent blockchain-based system. The platform operates within an ecosystem that supports remixing and combining works (referred to as “story legos”), fostering a collaborative creative process.
Architecture
One of Story Protocol’s main objectives is to adapt to a world where digital assets can be rapidly copied and modified, while still preserving creators’ rights. It offers tools to protect IP in the face of increasing artificial intelligence usage, enabling creators to track IP usage and modifications, and receive royalties for AI-generated works.
Story Protocol consists of several important modules:
📜 Licensing Module
Responsible for defining and attaching licenses to IP Assets.
💸 Royalty Module
Responsible for handling royalty flow between parent & child IP Assets.
❌ Dispute Module
Responsible for handling the dispute of wrongfully registered or misbehaved IP Assets.
👥 Grouping Module
Responsible for handling groups of IPAs.
In addition, Story Protocol is actively working on building an infrastructure for Web3, where creative assets can be managed and protected in a decentralized manner, without the involvement of traditional government structures. This is particularly relevant in the context of the development of metaverses, where clear rights definitions for derivative products such as comics, movies and animations created from different NFT collections is required.
In this way, Story Protocol aims to revolutionize the field of intellectual property by making it more open and accessible to creators, while ensuring fair remuneration and maintaining control over their works through the blockchain.
Let’s imagine a user — an aspiring writer — comes to Story Protocol with the goal of creating their own literary world and protecting their copyright.
Step 1: IP Registration on the Blockchain
The first step is for the user to register their work on the platform. This could be a novel, a comic book universe, or a series of short stories. Story Protocol allows them to tokenize their intellectual property (e.g., create an NFT based on the work), which provides ownership recorded on the blockchain. This gives the author control over licensing and allows them to define the terms of use for others.
Step 2: Setting Licenses
Next, the author can define the rules for how their content is used. For example, they can allow other users to create derivative works (such as remixes, adaptations, or fan art) for a fee, specifying licensing and royalty terms. These terms are embedded in smart contracts that automatically manage payments and enforce rights.
Step 3: Collaboration and Monetization
Other users on the platform can discover and use the IP registered by the author to create remixes, adaptations, or even entirely new projects based on the original works. For instance, one user might create a fan comic based on a book, while another could write a screenplay for a short film. All interactions are protected by smart contracts, ensuring that the original author receives royalties for each use of their work. Thanks to the transparent blockchain system, the author can always track how their IP is being used.
Step 4: Developing the Universe
As more creators contribute, the author’s universe can expand: using “story legos”, other creators can add new elements — such as characters, plots, or visual adaptations. The author retains control over how their original content is used and continues to earn financial rewards for each new work or adaptation that builds on their IP.
Advantages:
Transparency: The author knows who is using their content and under what conditions.
Automation: Smart contracts automatically manage royalty payments and ensure compliance with licensing terms.
Collaboration: The system fosters the creation of communities and joint projects, significantly expanding the reach of original works.
In this way, Story Protocol not only protects creators but also opens up new opportunities for them to monetize and expand their universes through collaboration with other creators.
Key Features of Story Protocol:
Intellectual Property (IP) Tokenization
Story Protocol enables the creation of tokens representing copyrights for works — such as books, comics, movies, and other creative assets. This simplifies rights management and creates a decentralized, immutable record on the blockchain.
Licensing and Rights Management
Users can establish custom licensing terms for their works, allowing other creators to use their content under specific conditions. Royalties are automatically paid out through smart contracts.
Transparency and IP Tracking
The protocol tracks the entire history of IP usage and modifications, from initial registration to derivative works. This is essential for both original authors and users who want to keep track of adaptations and remixes.
Formation of Collaborative Universes
The protocol supports the concept of “story legos” — story elements that can be remixed and combined — allowing authors and fans to collaboratively build creative universes.
Automated Royalties
Smart contracts ensure that all parties receive automatic royalty payments whenever IP is used, simplifying monetization and ensuring fair compensation for creators.
Protecting Rights to AI-Created Works
Story Protocol integrates with AI platforms to tokenize and protect content created by AI models. It also tracks how these works evolve over time.
Decentralized Content Management
Unlike traditional centralized IP systems, the Story Protocol platform operates on a decentralized Web3 framework, making processes more transparent and accessible to all participants.
These capabilities allow authors, artists and developers to not only protect their rights, but also to actively collaborate on the creation of new projects based on their works.
